THE MAGICIAN

THE TOWER
The Tower is one of the more disturbing cards in the tarot
deck. Just one look at it and you know the news may not be
too good.
In truth, that depends on the circumstances
you are in. People automatically go to the negative side of the Tower without
thinking about t
he other possible side of it. When we look at the illustration
of the Tower from the Rider-Waite deck it does look a bit grim.
We have people
falling from a tower that is engulfed in flames. The one person is wearing a
red cape. Red as we know is the color of passion
which is one indicator
that
things are far from calm. The lightening, the clouds, the flames, the pointy
mountain of ice below all indicate that there is
nothing friendly here.
The interesting
thing is the crown which is shown as having been blown off of the top of the
tower. Assuming that the crown
represents the crown
chakra, we have an
interesting situation. The crown chakra represents our highest self, our point
of personal divinity if you will,
and here it is pretty
much tossed aside. It
looks like panic city to me! Intuition has been thrown aside and fear is
running rampant. The Tower when we
see it in a reading
represents upheaval and
drastic change as a result. People are resistant to change so this is not a welcome
card to see because we
expect the worst as
a result of the change. To be honest,
this does come to pass more often then not. There are times however, when the
change is desired
and so it is actually
a welcome card to see. This can be
anything from a marriage to a move, to an unexpected pregnancy or a change in a
relationship that
would be positive one
of course such as you running into or hearing from a person you wanted to reconnect with or a much needed divorce.
As a card for meditation you would use this card as a way of
reflecting on how you can shake things up in your own life in order
to make the
changes you feel
you need in your life. In order to find the passion to do something drastic I would suggest using a red candle to light that fire for the
passion you will need to
make the change. For crystal use I would suggest a clear
quartz crystal to give you clarity and for aromatherapy, cinnamon oil for
a bit
of luck and energy to get
the task at hand done.
The most positive card in the tarot deck by far is The Sun.
When looking at this card, the actual Sun is the most dominant image showing us
warmth and
other good things we associate with the sun. The sun is also a sign of positive growth as shown by the sunflowers just below it. The child riding on the white horse
represents joy, pureness and possibilities, a reason to be
happy and celebrate life. The red flag is large in size and by its color and
size together we get the message of long
lasting love and joy.
We would draw on the energy of The Sun card when we need a shift in focus on the positive aspects of our lives. We can use it as a reminder that all will be well,
that we just need to believe. When you look at it this card you cant help but feel the message implied in it.It truly is the feel good card of the deck.
For meditation purposes you would want to light a
yellow candle to represent joy and the warmth of the sun. If you like to light
your candles in a trio yellow, orange
and red would be a great combination, the
brightness of those colors combined exudes a lot of joy and warmth. Amber would
be a good stone to use as it absorbs negativity
from the environment and in the oil infuser geranium would be an excellent choice for the oil because it is used to promote happiness and a sense of peace.
THE HIEROPHANT
When looking at the Hierophant we see 3 men. The dominant man of course is the Hierophant who is the chief priest or Pope. This card is about tradition and wisdom.
The keys at the bottom of the card represent
knowledge and because they are crossed, they are associated with the
ecclesiastical, namely the Pope. They can also symbolize
the keys to the gates of heaven. The Popes crown represents his authority in higher matters. For purposes of meditation and reflection we would choose this card when we are looking
for ways to deepen our spiritual
beliefs and looking for ritual as a way of expressing or experiencing these
beliefs. So for example, in order to incorporate more ritual into our daily
spiritual lives
we might explore things like morning meditation, prayers or daily inspirational readings as a way to connect us to the source. We can also use this card to ground ourselves by focusing on the
traditional aspects of our lives that give us comfort. The mundane rituals of our lives, like our morning cup of coffee, our morning shower, feeding our pets at the appointed time, a
re examples of mundane ritual. These rituals give us just a bit of structure which helps bring us back into balance when we feel we are surrounded by chaos.
To enhance this meditation experience we might want to light
a white candle for spirituality and use sapphire as it is the stone of wisdom.
Amethyst which is associated with the
crown chakra would also be a good choice. As for aromatherapy, I would suggest Frankincense, or if you dont care for that scent, you could use Jasmine.
The High Priestess
I love this card. When we look at the High Priestess we see a serene woman sitting in contemplation. She represents inner wisdom and intuition. The cross on her gown and the torah in her lap and the sliver of the moon by the bottom of her gown shows that her spiritual wisdom transcends any one religion and rather encompasses them all as these are the symbols of some of the major religions, Christianity, Judaism and Muslim. On top of her head is the moon, again showing hidden aspects of ourselves. The fruits in the background represent the fruitfulness and abundance of knowledge that is hers. The black and white columns with contrasting letters for me represent the idea of the Chinese symbol of yin-yang where opposite energies are brought into harmony and balance. When the High Priestess comes up in a reading the message is that you are to let yourself be guided more by your intuition as it will always serve you well. The High Priestess is serene because she knows the truth and will let herself be guided by her soul. She has let the fear produced by ego drop away. She accepts the principles of the spiritual and holds all beliefs as equal in value.
You would want to use the energy of the High Priestess in meditation when you are feeling that your intuition is blocked and you want to get more in touch with your inner voice. Its time to quiet the mind and listen. To enhance the meditation experience, I would suggest lighting either a purple candle for intuition, a blue candle for calm or white for purity and spirituality. Amethyst is the stone of intuition or moonstone could be used as well to calm emotions. For aromatherapy l I would suggest lavender or chamomile for their relaxing properties. Chime music in the background or singing bowl music would be a wonderful addition.
The Devil is another one of those "scary" cards that people
don't like to see come up in a reading. Admittedly it is a bit scary, but for a
different reason than most people think.
When we look at the Devil, he is the
largest figure on the card towering over two small humans. Traditionally this
is a card that shows addiction with the chains, strong sexual
desire shown by
the nudity of the man and woman and the horns each of them are wearing along
with a tail. The tail, which is associated with an animal or the devil itself, shows
the baser side of ourselves. On the tip of the man's tail is fire, suggesting lustful passion and on the woman's tail there is fruit suggesting perhaps the temptation from the Garden of Eden.
Looking more closely at the chains, we see that although the couple is chained around their necks, their hands are free thereby showing us that they have the power to release themselves
from any restrictions. The interesting aspect of the Devil is that he has a belly button suggesting that he is not a demon, but rather, something man made. So, for the most part, when I see
this card in a reading, I see it as a card of self made restriction. Therefore it is in one's power to release themselves from these self imposed restrictions.
When using this card for meditation purposes you would use it to focus on how you are feeling restricted by circumstances in your life and ways you can free yourself from this mind set.
For example, you could ask
yourself in what way you are holding yourself captive out of fear. I would
suggest a white candle for focus on the aspect of spirituality and higher
thought.
For aromatherapy I would suggest Lavender or Camomile oil for a sense of calm and relaxation which will help you to release the tension you may feel around restrictions that exist in your life.
Perhaps the most feared card in the tarot deck is Death, well, at least to people who are unfamiliar with the tarot deck. And let’s face it, seeing the image and
the word Death can be off putting, however the Death
card in tarot does not represent the actual death of a person. What it does
represent is a transformation of
a situation. Depending on where things stand in the present, Death will represent a rebirth or an ending. So for example, it can represent a rebirth or positive change
in a relationship that was thought to be over. The image on this card is of Death riding a horse. I really like the use of the black and white colors showing endings on one
side and rebirth
on the other side. The flag that Death is holding illustrates the same concept with
the white flower on top of the field of black. From the darkness of black,
life
is reborn with the flower. Also, if you look in the background of the card, the
sun is starting to rise, showing again the image of rebirth. The woman looking
away from
the image of Death shows the fear of transforming oneself. The two figures of the men, one dead, the other very much alive, illustrates once again, the concept of death and rebirth.
When we look at the Empress we see a woman who is quite
serene and well taken care of. She is sitting very comfortably among a pile of
pillows
and adorned with a crown of stars and a beautiful long flowing gown.
Abundance is the word that comes readily to mind when looking at this card.
The heart propped up by her chair is white showing the purity and generosity of her love. The stars on her crown shows that she holds many hopes and
dreams and
from her contented stance, you can sense that she believes she will achieve
them. There is a glow of bright yellow around her head suggesting
that she radiates warmth and joy. In her hand she seems to be holding the world which is perched on top of her wand. Traditionally the Empress is the card of
the mother and as such represents growth and abundance especially around family. She is truly a warm and nurturing woman with pureness of heart and generosity
of spirit. She sits ready to help and support her friends and family and in turn is highly valued and loved.
When using the energy of the Empress in meditation we may want to focus on some of the ways we can nourish and care for ourselves in terms of spirit. For example,
you may want to ask “how can I learn to love myself and feel content with all that I am?” How can I be more generous with myself and in turn, with others around me?
What do I need to get to a place where I feel cared for? How do I love myself and others unconditionally?
For meditation purposes I would suggest a pink candle, rose oil and for a crystal, rose quartz all of which represent the aspect of love because The Empress is all about love.
Although the name can be a bit off putting to the novice tarot student, the Hanged Man is in no danger of losing his life.
He seems
quite content to be doing nothing. The color red on his pants shows a lack of
passion as they are in an upside down position.
There is the suggestion that he chooses to remain with his hands tied, as well, as he is not at all upset by his circumstances. The gold around his head
shows that he has not only has
suspended thoughts of living in joy but is also choosing to suspend spiritual
wisdom. When he comes up in a reading
The Hanged Man shows a period of stagnation and limbo in a given situation. Needless to say this is not a welcome card because we naturally want to see
our lives in some sort of motion. When I look at this card, the Beatles’ song “Nowhere Man” comes immediately to mind because it’s quite a perfect way to
describe this card:
He's a real nowhere
man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.
Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command!
He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lends you a hand!
When using the energy of the Hanged Man in meditation, we may want to reflect on ways we can break out of our limbo or nowhere man mentality.
For example, let’s say you are in a job that you don’t particularly care for but continue working at it because it’s comfortable to do so. Or, you are thinking
about a relationship which has been at a stand still for a while. What is it that keeps you from taking action? Well, whether it’s a relationship or job or something
else, the reason for inaction is fear. Are you willing to let your fears keep you from living your life in growth, abundance and joy? If not, when you meditate on this
card, ask your higher self how you can be released from your fears. In order to enhance your focus I would suggest a red candle to capture the essence of passion in
your life and for aromatherapy I would
suggest Cinnamon oil to enhance your psychic awareness and physical energy. By
enhancing your psychic awareness you will
diminish the ego based fear that keeps you trapped in limbo.
French philosopher and journalist Albert Camus said, “in order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion;
in order to serve men better, one has to hold them at a distance for a time.” And thus we have the archetype of The Hermit.
Whenever we see The Hermit, he is almost always portrayed as an elderly man holding a lantern. In this particular picture he is shown to
be
standing on the top of a mountain illustrating someone who has reached a
certain pinnacle of wisdom, through age and experience.
However, he still seeks answers as shown by the lantern he holds in his hand. The pole he is leaning on is reminiscent of the Ace of Wands
which represents growth, so we see that through wisdom comes growth. When the Hermit arrives in a reading he is reflecting a person’s desire
to have a bit of a retreat in order to think things through carefully. Depending upon where he shows up in a reading he can be indicative of someone
actually over thinking things and needing instead to take a more intuitive approach to a situation
When using the Hermit for meditation, we may want to ask ourselves what situation in our lives we need to give some deeper thought to. Perhaps this
is a time for you to figure things out alone without the help of outside
influences. The suggestion here is that you have more wisdom then you know.
To
help focus on the energy of The Hermit I would use a blue candle for it’s
calming effect and a quartz crystal to add clarity of thought. For aromatherapy
I would suggest black pepper oil which has the magical influence of increasing mental clarity.
The Emperor is a card about success and also about control.
When we look at the picture of The Emperor, we see a man who has achieved
success in his life.
After all, he is the Emperor, he is firmly in control. Looking at his picture, we don’t get the feeling of a warm cozy guy. Seated on his steely colored throne wearing his steel boots,
he has the look of a man who means business. When he turns up in a reading as an outcome card he represents a positive outcome. Success is assured. If he represents a particular person,
he embodies a person who is mature and probably financially successful as well, but he is also someone who tends to be a bit authoritative and controlling. As a person, he is difficult to deal
with because he insists on doing things his way. When I see the Emperor in readings that I do for others, more often than not he is showing up in a shadow position indicating someone trying
to get, or maintain control of a situation rather than to let things flow as they will. As you can imagine, control issues come up quite a bit in relationship readings. Someone is either trying to
control the other or perhaps even themselves,
meaning that they are allowing their egos to hold themselves back from what
spirit knows to be something or someone good. The ego jumps in
and says ”no way”, it can’t and won’t be done. Spirit asks, “why not”?
When using the energy of the Emperor for meditation, we may
want to focus on where we can bring control back to ourselves. This is not
about trying to influence another person, but rather
how you can increase your feelings about your personal worth, while leaving the ego behind. We can also use this card to help us release the need to control situations and other people by
asking ourselves where in our lives we are not allowing for things to
flow freely. When we try to manipulate people or situations we are operating out
of ego and far from spirit. By letting go
of control and letting spirit take the lead, we will arrive at our destination that much faster and with minimal stress. I would suggest using a white candle to help focus on the crown chakra
of higher wisdom to allow your spiritual self to shine through the ego. An amethyst would be an excellent crystal to use to enhance your intuition and lavender oil for aromatherapy to help
you to feel more relaxed.
The Wheel of Fortune
I love the fact that there is a game show named after a tarot card! The Wheel of Fortune shows us the cyclical nature of lifes fortunes. What goes up will eventually come down and vice versa. Simply put it represents a change in circumstances and whether these changes will be positive or negative depends upon where the card shows up in a reading. This is mostly seen as a positive card, indicating good fortune. The images and symbols on this card are a bit more complicated than on the previous cards and not particularly useful to the person who is simply using the card for meditation based on the meaning of the card itself. I would like to point out a few interesting features of the card though. On the wheel itself are Greek and Hebrew letters plus the alchemical signs for salt, water, sulfur and mercury. The four creatures each represent one of the four seasons as so defined because these creatures are the four fixed signs in astrology which were originally based on the equinoxes and solstices of earlier days, this according to Rachel Pollack in her book Tarot Wisdom.
For meditation purposes you would want to use the energy of this card when you are focusing on the desire for change in your life. One way you can use this card is to look at the picture of the wheel and imagine that you are pushing it upwards towards change for the better in your life powered by your belief in your ability to meet your goal. Holding that image in your mind for just 5 minutes will help you to feel you have the strength and ability to accomplish that which you desire. Because The Wheel of Fortune is cyclical in nature, you may want to use an oil that is associated with the moon such as Jasmine, Sandalwood or Lemon. For candle choice I would suggest white for the spiritual aspect of the card as it does suggest destiny.
The Star
This is a lovely card showing that there is hope and that dreams can come true. The image of the woman pouring the water onto the ground and into the pond, represents both healing and hope. Her nudity represents a feeling of comfort and peace and openness born out of her belief that all is well. The starry sky suggests wishing upon a star for dreams to come true. The color white representing the spiritual aspect of belief and the color yellow represents joy and warmth. In a reading this card shows that there is hope in a given situation and that dreams really can come true. If the card falls in a shadow position it is indicating that you are letting negativity keep you from your dreams. You have lost belief in yourself.
When using this card for meditation purposes you would want to focus on your dreams. Have fun with this card. Let your inner child out to play. Make a wish and put it out there with the belief that it can be manifested. You can also use this card to focus on how you can be more optimistic about your dreams, your relationships, your job and your life.
To enhance the meditation experience I would suggest a purple candle for its association with magic and mystery or a white candle for the spiritual association. Jasmine would be a good choice for aromatherapy as it is associated with dreams. Vanilla would be another good choice as it is associated with magic!
THE LOVERS
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you
in time - It's easy.”
The Lovers is a card of choice and decisions that have to do primarily with love. I say primarily because if The Lovers comes up in any other type of reading such as career or finance, it would show simply a decision to be made in that regard. When looking at the Rider-Waite version of the Lovers it has a striking similarity to the Devil Card. The trees on either side of the man and woman were their tails in the Devil card. The tails suggested lust, while the trees hold both the passion and promise of growth. The snake represents the decision that is before them. The sun and angel suggest happiness and pureness of love that will rise above the clouds of uncertainty. In this picture the lovers are standing apart hands open, looking upward for guidance.
When using the energy of The Lovers card, you will want to focus on what issues are keeping you from making a decision within a relationship, or what is keeping you apart from another person. By working with your intuition, you can release the fears that hold you back from forming a closer union with another person. The real decision, whether it be about a relationship or another matter in your life, is whether you should choose to hold onto the fear born from ego, or release this to the energy of your higher self. Once you can distinguish between the two energies, the answer of your inquiry will become quite obvious to you. The color green, which represents the heart chakra is the best color to use when focusing on the energy of The Lovers. Rhodochrosite, which is a deep pink stone, is the crystal of the soul mate, and Rose Quartz which is a very pale pink, is the crystal of love. These would be the best choices for your stone. Rose oil or a rose scented candle will also enhance your meditation experience
