Essential Oil Recipies

BATH SALTS

Bath salts are easy to prepare and inexpensive as well. When poured into decorative glass jars they make lovely gifts. The advantage of making your own bath salts is that you know exactly what is going into your bath! The basic ingredients in the bath salts are 3 parts Epsom salts, 2 parts baking soda and 1 part table salt. From this basic recipe you can add the oils by the drop. there shouldn't be more than 10 total drops of oil per half cup of bath salts because oils are strong and using too much can irritate the skin. The following formula is from Scott Cunningham's book "The Complete Book of Incense, Oils and Brews" I chose these two to give as gifts this season because of their broad appeal.
Purification Bath
3 part Geranium
2 parts Rosemary
1 part Frankincense
Bathe in this blend to purify body, spirit and soul

Flowery Love Bath
3 parts Rose oil
2 parts Lavender
1 part Geranium
I also ground up a rose bud herb and added it to the mixture which made it look nice!

HERBAL HEALING BATH

The use of herbs and oils is both soothing and can be therapeutic. I tried this healing bath recipe the other night in the hope that it might just help! I keep my basket of herbs and natural cloth pouches in my bathroom so if spirit moves me I can make up a batch to use on the spot. I am a strong believer in the power of the mind to rid the body of dis-ease. The trick to using herbal baths is to repeat as long as is necessary to see some results. Making up an herbal bath packet is easy and fun. I find it fun and soothing just mixing the ingredients! Herbal bath ingredients can be wrapped up in cheesecloth and tied with a ribbon then added to a hot tub of water. Combining your warm soak with chakra vocalization and meditation will all help spin the type of magic you need. If you are unsure which chakra vocalization to use I would suggest using the root chakra chant. This is a formula from Scott Cunningham's book "Incense, Oils & Brews"
Healing Bath
3 parts Rosemary
2 parts lavender
2 parts rose
1 part peppermint
1 part cinnamon
If you want to shake off a cold add 2 parts eucalyptus to the formula!

The parts can be any measurement you want. For an average size pouch I used teaspoons as my measurement. If a shower is not an option you can use the herbs in the bag in the shower by rubbing the bag on any afflicted areas of your body and also by inhaling the scent of the herbs as they are releasing through the warm water.

CLARY SAGE

Clary sage essential oil has a strong, nutty aroma. The essential oil Clary sage it used for its antidepressent, antiseptic, deodorant, digestive and sedative properties. In aromatherapy mixtures it is blended with Atlas cedarwood, bergamot, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, and lime.

Clary sage with its regenerative properties is commonly used for the skin in today’s aromatherapy. It is used for premature balding to stimulate hair growth. It is used to control greasy hair and dandruff. It is also used in dream therapy. It helps you to remember the dreams by being able to dream more clearly and helps with the memory of dreams. It is also recommended for stress therapy.

My favorite blend that I use is to help with stress and to promote overall well being. The mixture is 2 drops each of clary sage, geranium, and frankincense oils mixed into a blending oil. I store it in a bottle and dab it on my wrists and neck when I need a mood lift. I always apply before bedtime as well It really has lightened my spirits! If you don't want to use a blending oil, you can mix the essential oils in a little bit of water and put it in a spray bottle.

Aromatherapy

Most of us use aromatherapy every day when we put on perfume or cologne. I we think about it we are surrounding by various forms of aromatherapy in our daily lives. The smell of grass, certain foods, the air after the rain, flowers, trees, the ocean. And the list goes on.  The purpose of actively  using aromatherapy  is to help balance and heal our chakras , to enhance a meditation experience and to lift or stimulate our moods.  One of my favorite books on the subject is called Magical Aromatherapy. by Scott Cunningham. It he explains the history and use of aromatherapy in addtion to listing the uses of   the most widely used essential oils.  He has another book that shows the reader how to use these oils in  making bath salts and lotions. That one is called The Complete Book of incense Oils and Brews.  Together  these two books provide the reader with a solid beginning to their aromatherapy adventure.  Since there are several types of oils that will work for the same effect you are trying to achieve it simply becomes a matter of personal preference as to which one you use. for example, rose and lavendar oils both work with enhancing properties of love  When shopping for  your essential oils you will want to buy natural oils and not blends or synthetic substitutes. Oils can be found in new age stores or  sometimes in natural food stores and of course online. The advantage of shopping for them in person is that you are able to test the scent of each one before you buy it to make sure that it is something pleasing to you. The price on some of these oils can be somewhat expensive depending upon the oil. However keep in mind that you are only using a few drops of the oil  at any given time so the bottle will last for quite a long time.
If you are starting up your oil collection here are a few suggestions:

Rose Oil and Lavendar for Love- You will see Rosewater oil which is a lot less expensive and avialable then pure rose oil. Both Rosewater Oil and lavendar are fairly inexpensive.

Basil, Cinnamom, Ginger Oils for Money both of which are pretty inexpensive as well

Peppermint and Lemon Oil for purification and lifting the spirit. Peppermint oil is also good for some headache relief!

I also like Vanilla oil but it is one of the more expensive oils.

Some of the oil scentsa can also be found in the actual herbs so for example if you wanted the basil oil scent you could simply squeeze a fresh leaf of basil and have that scent. The same applies to the various flower oils listed

If you are doing chakra work  I would recommend  “the book of Chakra Healing” by Liz Simpson. It is she gives you several choices of good oils to use in working with each of the chakras.

There are also several books out there that more a medicinal spin on aromatherapy which is interesting as well. Of course caution should be taken before using these things as substitutes for traditional medical care.

You can use the oils in several different ways.
In an oil burner where you add a few drops of the oil to water and heat it up with a tea light

or
You can put a few drops into a tissue and hold it up to your nose and when not in use place it is a plastic bag. This method is portable so it work in an office envirornent, or when you are traveling or trying to fall asleep at night and don’t want to leave an open fire burning.
You can also use these oils to dress a candle for use in candle magic or meditation What you don’t want to do is to ingest them in any way as most of these  are not for internal use.
